         Sinusitis is an inflammation of the hollow cavities of the nose around the skull. A sinus infection occurs when a pathogenic microorganism (virus, bacterium, or a fungus) grows within a sinus and causes intermittent blockage of the sinus ostium that interferes with air flow into the sinuses and the drainage of mucous out of the sinuses. The sinus openings, called Ostia, may be obstructed by swelling of the tissue lining the Ostia and adjacent nasal passage tissue; for example, from colds, allergies, and tissue irritants (nasal sprays, cocaine, cigarette smoke). Less commonly, sinuses can become obstructed by tumours or growths. but also can be caused by allergies and chemical or particulate irritation of the sinuses.
